Note to the plastics industry: we’re not stupid
May 1, 2008
I e-mailed the MAM company a few days ago asking about BPA in their products. The e-mail I received from them is below. Notice how she never directly answers whether or not their products contain BPA (The exception, of course, are the Sassy products but they don’t contain BPA. Huh!).
Dear Tonks:
Thank you for your email. The shield & knob of the MAM Pacifier is made of polycarbonate, except for the Soft Rim Pacifier the shield is polypropylene and the knob is polycarbonate. The clear nipple is silicone and the brownish nipple is latex. All of the Sassy Feeding Products are BPA-free. Be assured we only use safe non-toxic materials.
Best Regards, Judy/Sassy/MAM Consumer Relations
I love the line: Be assured we only use safe non-toxic materials. Right. That’s why a whole fucking country banned the shit.
Let Ms. Minix know your thoughts. Here’s her e-mail: jminix@sassybaby.com.

I have been reading and reading and reading about this topic. A search lead me to your blog.
I can’t seem to find the answer to some basic questions.
If you know the answers or know where I could find them I would be appreciative.
1. I know there are the different numbers on the bottom. Do the different numbers tell you if there IS BPA or not? Or is there BPA in ALL plastic? For instance I’ve gotten rid of anything that isn’t a 5. Am I ok now?
2. When is BPA in plastic bad? For instance I know that microwaving the plastic can make it leach out, but is does it leach out if there is cold liquid in it and you don’t heat it up? Also I know that the chemicals in the dishwasher detergent can make it leach, but what if I just hand wash it? And once it’s had hot liquid or been washed in the dishwasher is it forever leaching even if I never put hot liquid in it or wash it in the dishwasher again?
I hope you can help!!

kerry- I’ll do my best to find the answers and will post later today. In the meantime read the Pitch Weekly article that’s linked in this post. I know I can help (at least a little) with the first question but I’ve been wondering the same thing about the second question.

According to what I saw on NBC, throw away 7s. 3s and 6s are questionable. See http://dailynightly.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/04/17/914073.aspx

Hi Everybody,
I’ve been researching toxic plastics for over two years and have compiled a TON of great info about BPA on my blog (www.thesoftlandingbaby.com).
In reviewing the email response you received from Sassy/MAM, I noticed that they mentioned polycarbonate plastic as an ingredient for their pacifiers. BPA is found in polycarbonate, so they were being honest on that point.
Once you are able to wrap your mind around what BPA is and where it’s found, life will get a little easier. Stick with it and learn as much as you can. Keep up the great work of education other parents on the issue!

P.S. We just published a free Guide to Feeding Baby Safely. It’s available for download on our blog under the Getting Started tab.
